Products and Economic Impact

Personalized medicine is a prevailing new medical technology that is revolutionizing science. However, economists are skeptical because they

believe that it could have a huge financial impact. In addition, approximately 56% of healthcare professionals believe that personalized medicine will increase the cost of prescription medicine. Currently, the economic perspective on medicine only considers the mass production that provides for the entire population. An entirely new economic model would need to be established in order for personalized medicine to be affordable and economically successful.

Tarceva, the brand name for Erlotinib, was created by Astellas Pharma U.S., Inc. It is the first personalized medicine approved by the FDA for the use in humans with the EGFR mutation. The EGFR mutation is positive metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. In order for patients to be prescribed this medicine,   their tumor must have a protein called epidermal growth factor receptor. Erlotinib blocks this protein, which prevents the tumor from growing by cutting off cell division and growth.

23andMe is a company that offers personalized genetic reports. After sending in your saliva within 6-8 weeks they will send you a detailed report of your genetic health, traits, and ancestors. Their website states, "We are the first and only genetic service available directly to you that includes reports that meet FDA standards." Their process allows personalized medicine to flourish by allowing individuals to directly access their unique genome. Understanding individual genomes and applying them to medicine is the future of healthcare.

Herceptin is the brand name for Trastuzmab. This treatment helps with breast cancer and works by binding to a protein called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2. In breast cancers, extra copies of the gene that codes for HER2 are made which results in the cells dividing more rapidly. Trastuzmab prevents HER2 from sending the growth signal. Thus, it prevents the cells from rapidly dividing. Patients that have HER2 and use the treatment have been greatly affected because the source is being directly targeted.
